Do I need to see a rheumatologist?

It is normal to experience occasional muscle and joint pain, no matter how old you are, or what your health is like. However, if the muscle and joint pain you are experiencing lingers, gets worse, or causes more pain than you believe is normal, this can be an indication that there is an underlying problem. You can speak with your primary care provider for an evaluation, where typically they will decide whether an appointment with a rheumatologist is needed to monitor your health.

If you have family members that live with autoimmune or rheumatic disease, earlier monitoring should be done in order to catch the earliest signs of a problem. Additionally, if you notice rapid acceleration in symptoms, this is cause to see a rheumatologist early on.

Some of the most common signs and symptoms of rheumatic diseases can improve or even resolve temporarily when they are initially treated but can return once the treatment being used is halted. If the symptoms continue to come back, a rheumatology evaluation may be needed to evaluate your treatment options. Although treatment should not be delayed while awaiting a rheumatology appointment, certain medications can improve symptoms and make a diagnosis more difficult. Speak with your physicians to learn more about how to get an accurate diagnosis.

What do I need to share with my rheumatologist during our first visit?

According to the American College of Rheumatology

-Any previous lab and/or radiographic X-ray/ultrasound/MRI tests results for review (medical records are typically sent by the referring physician, but occasionally – despite best intentions – are not present. Sometimes tests need to be repeated to confirm the result)

-An up-to-date medication list with the specific dosages you are taking (include a list of medications you have already tried to reduce duplication of prior treatments)

-A list of allergies to medications

-Your family history, including any known relatives with rheumatologic/autoimmune disease
