Osteoporosis is a fairly common disease. More than half of all adults over the age of 50 have osteoporosis. This condition causes weakened bones which can lead to fractures. Bone fractures at an older age can come with higher consequences than when you are younger and able to heal quickly.

Below are some of the most common signs or causes that you may have osteoporosis or an increased chance of getting it:

You have experienced more than one broken bone in the last two years: If you have gone most of your life without experiencing much damage to your bones and then suddenly have more than one injury in a short amount of time this could be a warning sign. This is especially a risk sign if you got your injury doing something that was low stress on your body.

Naturally thin or petite: If you have a naturally small-framed body you are more likely to develop osteoporosis at a younger age. Being larger framed does not mean you cannot get osteoporosis, it just means you are not as naturally predisposed as someone who is small framed.

Smoking: Smoking cigarettes is bad for your health in many ways. Did you know it can also affect your bone health? If you have smoked most of your adulthood there is a good chance you have put stress on your bones. This can increase your chances of developing osteoporosis.

Drinking: If you drink more than two alcoholic beverages a day you are lowering the amount of calcium, magnesium, and other minerals in your system. These are all important minerals to keep your bones healthy and strong, without them you are likely to suffer bone damages.

Someone in your family had osteoporosis: If one of your parents or grandparents had osteoporosis the chances of you getting it dramatically increase. Talk to your doctor about your family’s medical history and monitor your bone health with regular visits!
