Managing arthritis during the colder months of the year can be challenging. The weather seems to increase discomfort for many patients, making it more difficult to manage with just exercise, diet, and over-the-counter pain reliever.

Below are some tips to help patients manage their arthritis pain and discomfort in cold weather:

Bundle Up: Whenever it is cold outside, bundle up with warm layers to prevent or decrease painful flare ups. Wearing extra layers of gloves, socks, knee coverings, and more can help to keep your joints comfortable. You can take layers off if you become too warm but will have the option to protect your affected areas.

Stay Hydrated: Staying hydrated will soothe your joints and help to increase your activity. Regular exercise and an active lifestyle can go a long way when it comes to reducing painful symptoms and flare ups.

Exercise Indoors: While it’s perfectly reasonable to want to avoid the cold winter chill, people with joint pain should still make an effort to stay active. The less sedentary you are, the better your physical function. Come up with an indoor exercise plan that works for your lifestyle and stick with it.

Warm Water: Swimming in a heated pool is not only great exercise it and can also be tremendously soothing to your joints. You can also get relief from warm baths and showers at home to keep your pain reduced.

Add VItamins and Supplements: It has been shown that by adding vitamin D and fish oil supplements to your diet you can reduce the symptoms of joint pain. This can be especially helpful in the cooler months when you need an extra boost.
