Cold and flu season is around the corner, however, this year we are also fighting against the spread of the highly contagious COVID-19. With the risk for complications increased if you contract more than one respiratory illness at a time, it is critical for patients, especially those that are considered high-risk to do everything they can to reduce their chances of getting ill this cold and flu season.
Listed below are some tips to help you protect your household from getting sick this year:
Wash Your Hands: With the pandemic impacting so many of the ways we live our lives, one thing is for sure, we are all washing our hands more frequently than before! Carry this good habit into the cold and flu season to protect yourself from getting sick. Carrying a personal bottle of hand sanitizer can help to keep your hands free of germs whenever you are unable to use soap and water.
Stay Hydrated: Staying hydrated helps to keep your immune system strong and your body healthy. Keep sports drinks that have electrolytes around your home in case of illness so that you are able to protect your body from dehydration. If you think you may have the cold, flu, or COVID-19, contact your doctor at Wellspire Medical Group.
Get Vaccinated: The most effective way to protect yourself and your family from catching the flu is by getting vaccinated. Everyone over the age of 6 months old should be vaccinated unless told otherwise by the physician. Patients over the age of 50 are at higher risk for developing complications and should receive the flu shot every year.
Cold, Flu, or COVID-19?
A challenge we will face moving into this cold and flu season is that the symptoms of the cold, flu, and COVID-19 are for the most part very similar. If you’re ill but unsure about what is making you sick, contact Wellspire Medical Group. Our team can help you get the solutions you are looking for.
When Should I Get The Flu Shot?
The flu vaccination will take about 2 weeks to effectively guard your body by creating antibodies to this virus. This makes it important to be vaccinated before the flu is spreading throughout our communities. Make plans to get vaccinated early in fall, before flu season begins and before the end of October. Getting vaccinated early can result in reduced protection against flu infection later in the flu season.
