Having the flu is a miserable experience. Typically once you have contracted the flu virus you will have a fever. Even though you have a fever your body will trade off between sweating and then having the chills. Your throat may be sore with a powerful cough, your nose congested or runny. The strongest symptoms typically are severe body aches, headaches and fatigue. Some people will experience vomiting and diarrhea when they have the flu but this is more common in children than it is in adults with the flu.
1. Stay Home: As soon as you become symptomatic plan on staying home for 5-7 days. The flu is extremely contagious and it is best not to risk spreading it by being around people. This may feel like a punishment but it does not have to. Get some of your favorite snacks, a comfortable blanket binge watch Netflix, play a video game, read a book- whatever you fantasize about doing when you’re drowsy at work on a Monday morning- do it now!
2. Stay Hydrated: Staying hydrated is very important when you have the flu! You may not feel like drinking or eating anything but keeping your body well supplied with liquids actually helps break down mucus, making it easier to get out of your system.
3. Fight The Pain: Body aches can be the most miserable part of having the flu, be sure to keep ibuprofen and acetaminophen close by when you are ill. Not only will the medicine help fight the pain, it will also help reduce your fever.
4. Take A Warm Shower or Bath: Not only can this be relaxing and help with body aches and chills- it also can help bring moisture to your sinuses which can reduce discomfort and help you breathe clearer.
