Water’s Role In The Body
The only nutrient more important than water for sustaining human life is oxygen. 60 percent of the human body is made up of water, which is mostly found in our blood. Water plays an essential role to the development and health of every cell and plays an important part of nearly every major function of the body. Water is a vital part of regulating the temperature of our bodies, it cushions our joints, lubricates the pathways of our arteries, helps us maintain regular waste production, and so much more.
How Much Water Is Enough?
Everyone knows the old rule of thumb that everyone should drink eight 8-ounce glasses of water a day but this is a bit dated. The Institute of Medicine currently recommends that men should drink at least 104 ounces of water a day, which equates to 13 cups. They also say women should be drinking a minimum of 72 ounces, which equates to 9 cups. Even still, their are variables based on your age, weight and lifestyle that determine a more precise amount of water you should be consuming daily.
The Benefits of Staying Hydrated
Skin: Not only does water help keep you skin clear and soft, it helps with elasticity. This helps you stay youthful and prevents premature sagging of the skin.
Mental Health: There is a strong link between depression and dehydration. Try to put yourself on a schedule to remember to get enough water in a day.
Internal Cleanse: Your kidneys require water to filter waste out of your blood. When the waste is filtered your body excretes it through your urine, However if you are dehydrated you are more prone to urinary tract infections and painful kidney stones.
Healthy Heart: About 90% of your blood is comprised of water. When your body is dehydrated this causes a decrease in the volume of your blood. This requires your heart to work harder to pump the blood through your system.
Efficient Muscles and Joints: Your muscles and joints require water to efficiently do their job. Muscles need water to carry nutrients and expel waste. In order for joints to be properly lubricated, which decreases pain, they need to be well hydrated.
The benefits of staying hydration are truly countless. Make sure you are getting enough water daily to promote a healthy and happy life!
