The flu virus is highly contagious and can be life threatening for some people. This is why it is important for us to know how the flu virus spreads in order to know how to properly isolate it and protect those in close proximity of the virus. Family members sharing a home with an infected person and medical professionals caring for the ill are at especially high risk for contracting the virus and should use extreme caution to avoid catching the virus.
Person to Person Contamination
The largest contributing cause for why the flu virus spreads is through moisture in an infected person. When a sick person talks, laughs, coughs, or sneezes tiny droplets of liquid fly out of their mouth and spread through the air. When these droplets find their way into another person’s mouth or nose- they become contaminated with the virus.
In addition, flu germs are passed along from sharing unsanitized spaces. When a person with the flu uses a phone, table, or any other object they are leaving behind the same infectious droplets as when they cough or sneeze. The flu virus can live without a host for over two hours on surfaces. Wash your hands frequently, sanitize surfaces regularly and when necessary wear a face mask to avoid contracting the virus.
How Long Is Someone Contagious With The Flu
According to the CDC most healthy adults are capable of infecting other people beginning 1 day before symptoms develop and up to 7 days after becoming sick. Children may pass the virus for longer than 7 days. Symptoms start 1 to 4 days after the virus enters the body. That means that you may be able to pass on the flu to someone else before you know you are sick, as well as while you are sick. Some people can be infected with the flu virus but have no symptoms. During this time, those persons may still spread the virus to others.
