Viral infections and outbreaks can be a source of anxiety for many people. While outbreaks of uncommon viruses are rare and typically contained quickly, viruses such as the flu are much more common and difficult to contain. It is especially important for senior citizens, young children, and those who have compromised immune systems, to do everything they can in order to protect themselves from viral infection.

Listed below are some of the best prevention strategies you can implement in order to help protect yourself and your loved ones from viral infection:

Get a Flu Shot: In recent years, there has been a lot of misinformation and unnecessary concerns surrounding the safety and side effects of the flu shot. These concerns have been unfounded and widely disputed by medical professionals around the world. Flu- vaccines are well proven to reduce the risk of catching the flu in patients of all ages.  The CDC suggests that everyone six months of age or older, and especially those who are at high risk for serious complications from the flu, get a flu shot. Flu shots can be life-saving in children and in the event that your child still contracts the flu, the vaccination can help to reduce the worst complications that come with the flu.

Stay Away From Sick People: While it is not always an option to avoid those who are sick, either due to them not showing symptoms of illness or sharing a home with an ill person, when possible staying away from sick people is your best option to protect yourself from catching a viral infection. If you are sharing space with someone who has a viral infection, wearing a face mask and increasing your hygiene practices. This includes  washing your hands more frequently and disinfecting all surfaces in your space.

Avoid Sharing: Avoid sharing anything that comes into contact with your mouth or nose, such as food, drink, makeup, sunglasses, etc. This can be difficult, especially with small children but is a good practice during flu season. Anything that goes near a person’s face, including their hands, can easily become infected. This is why disinfecting all surfaces in your home or workspace is crucial to protecting yourself from viral infection.

Stay Hydrated: Staying hydrated is an important part of keeping your body’s immune system strong. Make sure you and your loved ones are staying hydrated and making healthy choices when it comes to their diet in order to keep you immunity high.
