What Is Cholesterol?

Cholesterol is a naturally occurring, fatty substance that is found in the cells of the human body. In order for your body to successfully complete necessary functions, such as produce the proper hormones, create a healthy amount of vitamin D, and digest your food- your body needs cholesterol. Your body naturally will create this cholesterol in order to complete these functions. However, in addition to the naturally occurring cholesterol in your body, certain foods can lead to its production as well. Foods that are high in fat such as egg yolks, meats, and cheeses are high in cholesterol. Whenever your body takes in too much outside cholesterol it can lead to problems. This is because the cholesterol levels will begin to rise in your blood, to unhealthy levels. Whenever your body has too much cholesterol in the blood, it will begin to combine with other substances in your blood and form what is known as plaque. This plaque is thick and attaches itself to the walls of your arteries, which leads to blocked pathways in your circulation system. When the blood cannot pass freely through your arteries, you become at risk for cardiac conditions that can be life threatening.

What Risk Factors Can Lead To High Cholesterol?

While there are many factors that can contribute to high cholesterol including genetics, the most common reason for high cholesterol is an unhealthy lifestyle. This can include, but is not limited to the following:

Unhealthy Eating: Eating foods that are high in bad fats, such as those found in greasy or processed foods can lead to higher cholesterol. Instead of eating fast food burgers and deep fried chicken, try to eat a diet high in fruits and vegetables, and lean meats. If you are unsure of which foods are good for you or what a healthy portion is for your lifestyle, schedule an appointment with one of our doctors today.

Sedentary Lifestyle: Those who spend most of their time sitting with little exercise will lower the good cholesterol produced in their body. By increasing your physical activity and incorporating new ways to get your body in motion, you can help keep your cholesterol low and your heart health in check. Simple adjustments, such as taking the stairs everyday instead of an elevator can help to keep your cholesterol lower.
