What is rheumatoid arthritis?
Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is an autoimmune disorder that causes chronic inflammation of joints. RA normally begins slowly, with only minor inconsistent symptoms that progress over time. While the symptoms of this condition vary between people, most commonly people report experiencing joint pain.
Below are a list of symptoms of Rheumatoid Arthritis:
Fatigue- Before you start to experience any of the more obvious symptoms of RA you may start to feel uncharacteristically fatigued. This fatigue can precede other symptoms and may be accompanied with feelings of depression.
Morning stiffness- Waking up after hours of inactivity to joint stiffness is a sign of arthritis. If your stiffness is not long lasting and tend to be over within minutes, this is most likely a symptom of degenerative arthritis. If you morning stiffness lasts for a few hours at a time, this is normally a symptom of inflammatory arthritis and is common with RA.
Joint stiffness- If you are experiencing joint stiffness in your small joints, this is commonly an early sign of RA. This may happen at any time of the day, regardless of your level of activity. Most often, this stiffness begins by affecting the joints located in your hands. It typically begins slowly but can also come on quickly and cause an attack on multiple joints at once.
Joint pain- While joint stiffness is normally the first symptom, it is very often followed by tenderness and pain of the joints, This can be an issue while you are in motion or still and can be severe. The most common places for this pain to affect are in your hands and wrists. Other areas you may feel the pain are in your knees, feet, ankles, and shoulders.
Joint swelling- Inflammation of your joints may cause them enlarge and is often times obvious enough to see. Additionally, this swelling can lead to your joints feeling warm.
