in Family Practice

There are many different kinds of healthcare providers in the medical field today. With a wide range of titles and names, it is easy to understand how it can become confusing for a patient to know which kind of doctor they should be visiting. You may hear titles such as primary care practitioners (PCPs), family doctors, and internists and wonder what the difference is. These healthcare providers all tend to cover similar territory when it comes to treating patients. Knowing the difference between these health care professionals may be the best way to properly choose what kind of doctor that can best help you.

Understanding Primary Care Practitioners (PCP)
A primary care practitioner is an umbrella term that can reference any of the following health care professionals:

-family medicine practitioner

-nurse practitioner

-physician assistant

-internist

-pediatrician

-geriatrician

These medical professionals treat a wide range of health issues and can help their patients to arrange the best medical treatment plans with any specialists they may need to see. Additionally, PCPs are great for whenever you are sick and need a quick visit to make sure you are not experiencing complications and so that you can get the proper medication. PCPs are trained to treat patients of all ages for a wide variety of medical issues, including disease prevention and maintenance.

Understanding Family Doctors

Family doctors are trained to care for patients from infancy into seniority. They help patients take care of a wide range of issues from minor illness to major chronic disease. Family doctors also are able to treat other members of your family, which may be able to help you get ahead of potential genetic issues, like obesity, heart disease, and high cholesterol, if they are able to observe patterns in your family’s health. For many patients, having a doctor who is intimately aware of both your personal and family history can be helpful and comforting. And if your condition goes beyond the scope of your family doctor’s training, they may refer you to a specialist.
